How to Choose the Right Cable Size for a Job

Cable sizing decides whether an installation runs cool and safe or trips and overheats. Here is the practical way our counter staff work through it with contractors.

How to Choose the Right Cable Size for a Job

Cable sizing decides whether an installation runs cool and safe or trips and overheats. Here is the practical way our counter staff work through it with contractors.

Start with the load, not the price

Work out the design current of the circuit first. Add the connected load, apply the diversity that applies to the installation, then choose a conductor that carries that current with margin. Buying a smaller size to save on the quote usually costs more once the circuit has to be replaced.

Account for the run length

Volt drop grows with distance. On long runs to outbuildings, pumps or gate motors, the volt drop calculation often pushes the size up one step. Bring the run length to the counter and we will check it with you.

Match the cable type to the environment

Surfix in a roof space, armoured cable in the ground, flexible cord on moving equipment. Sunlight, moisture and mechanical damage all change what the cable has to survive.

Buy the terminations at the same time

Lugs, glands and cleats are part of the cable order. Collecting them together prevents a second trip and keeps the installation neat.
